The Solar System - Lesson 1 - Presentation

WELCOME TO THE SOLAR SYSTEM!

Are you ready to explore the Solar System, students of 5th of Primary? Before leaving the Earth you need to understand how it works and what are you going to find outside your lovely planet!

0:15 a 4.5-billion-year-old formation that races around the galactic centre at

0:33 It’s orbited by eight planets,
0:35 trillions of asteroids and comets and a few dwarf planets.

3:32 If we compare the sizes of the planets,
3:34 the differences between them become even clearer.
3:38 Jupiter is the leader in terms of size and weight;
3:42 small Mercury, on the other hand,
3:44 is even smaller than one of Jupiter’s moons, Ganymede.
3:48 Jupiter is so massive that alone it contains roughly 70% of the mass
3:53 of all the other planets and has a massive impact on its surroundings.
3:58 That’s a blessing for Earth, since Jupiter draws most of
4:01 the dangerously large asteroids that could wipe out life on Earth.
 
4:07 But even Jupiter is a dwarf in comparison to our star, the Sun.
4:12 Calling it massive does not do justice to the Sun.
4:15 It makes up 99.86% of the mass in our Solar system.
4:20 For the most part, it consists of hydrogen and helium.
4:23 Only less than 2% is made up of heavy elements, like oxygen or iron.
4:29 At its core, the Sun fuses 620 million tons of hydrogen each second
4:34 and generates enough energy to satisfy mankind’s needs for years.
 
4:41 But not only the eight planets orbit our Sun.
4:44 Trillions of asteroids and comets also circle it.
4:48 Most of them are concentrated into two belts:
4:51 the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
4:55 and the Kuiper belt at the edge of the Solar system.
4:58 These belts are home to countless objects, some as large as a dust particle,
5:02 others the size of dwarf planets.
5:06 The most well-known object in the asteroid belt is Ceres;
5:09 the most well-known objects in the Kuiper belt are Pluto, Makemake and Haumea.
5:16 Usually we describe the asteroid belt as
5:18 a dense collection of bodies that constantly collide.
5:22 But in fact, the asteroids are distributed across an area that is
5:26 so indescribably large that it’s even difficult to see two asteroids at once.
5:32 Despite the billions of objects in them,
5:34 the asteroid belts are fairly empty places.
5:37 And nonetheless, there are collisions over and over again.
5:41 The mass of both belts is also unimpressive:
5:44 the asteroid belt has a little less than 4% of our Moon’s mass, and
5:49 the Kuiper belt is only between one 25th and one 10th of Earth’s mass.
 
5:57 One day, the Solar system will cease to exist.
6:00 The Sun will die, and Mercury, Venus and maybe Earth too will be destroyed.
6:06 In 500 million years it will become hotter and hotter until at some point
6:11 it will melt Earth’s crust.
6:15 Then the Sun will grow and grow and either swallow Earth
6:18 or at least turn it into a sea of lava.
6:24 When it has burnt up all its fuel and lost most of its mass,
6:27 it will shrink to a white dwarf and burn gently for a few billion more years
6:32 before it goes out entirely.
6:36 Then, at the latest, life in the Solar system will no longer be possible.
6:41 The Milky Way will not even notice it.
6:44 A small part of it in one of its arms will become just a tiny bit darker.
6:48 And mankind will cease to exist or leave the Solar system
6:54 in search of a new home.
