Wood wind instruments

The concert band is composed by woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments, but there are families into this categories.

In this part we are going to talk about woodwinds family.

The woodwind instrument can be classified in families. There are instruments that use single cane or double cane, although some use cork on their head.

The double reed instruments

The term double reed comes from the fact that there are two pieces of cane, and the cane is considered the wood part of this instruments. In our music bands you can find bassoons and oboes, they belong to this family. To produce the sound, the reeds vibrate one on the other.

The simple reed instruments

As with double reed, instruments, the simple tongue is considered the wood part of these instruments. The sound is produced because a cane vibrates against the instrument's mouthpiece, and this can be of various materials, although the most common are made of metal or ebonite, a material similar to plastic.

The most used instruments in the wind band are clarinets and saxophones.

Other woodwinds instrumens

The flute, although considered an aerophone, belongs to the wood wind family. The sound is produced by a cork, but also, contrary to what happens with the metal instruments where the lip vibrates, the sound in the flute is produced in a natural way when blowing the air.
