Styles are a type of Writer object able to contain a number of format rules that can be applied to a part of the document wherever needed. In Writer there are paragraph styles, character styles, frame styles, page styles and lists styles.
Paragraph styles: They contain settings that can be applied to a paragraph of text as spacing, indentation, alignment, text flow, tabs, lines , and background color.
Character styles: They contain format settings for text as type of font, size, position and color.
Frame styles: They contain format settings for frames as type, size, position, adjust, background color, columns, anchor, wrap, alignment etc..
Page styles: They contain design features to format pages as margins, paper size, headers, footers, and columns.
List styles: They contain design features to format numbered and bulleted lists .
The more usual styles are paragraph, character and lists and can be applied easily from the apply style drop down list in the Format toolbar.
The styles and format (ESTILOS Y FORMATO) window is used to define and edit styles
To open out the Estilos y formato window press F11 or click in the button Estilos y formato in the format toolbar, ….
First choose one of the style categories using the drop down list at the bottom of the window Estilos y formató. Then select the element you want to format and, to apply the style double click the chosen style in Estilos y formato.
This is only valid pfor paragraph styles. the fastest way to create a style is: edit a part of the document with the wanted format, select it and write a name for it in the style list, then press Shift+F11 and give a name to the new style.
This is valid for any type of style. First drop down the window Estilos y formato,clicking on or pressing the key F11
Choose a style type selecting one the shown below buttons
Click in the tool Nuevo estilo a partir de la selección,.
Iinsert a name in the window Crea un estilo, and click in Aceptar:
También se pueden crear estilos, nuevos o basados en las características de otro, desde la ventana Estilos y formato. El proceso es muy similar en ambos casos y solo se diferencia en el momento de escoger si el estilo está basado en otro o en ninguno. Puedes ver los siguientes vídeos para ver como funciona:
To create a new style based in another existing style, just select the style, drop down the contextual menue and select Nuevo
To modify an existing style, just select the style, drop down the contextual menue and select Editar
To modify an existing style, just select the style, drop down the contextual menue and select Eliminar
To create a new page style:
Choose Formato | Estilos y formato, or press F11.
Click in the button Estilos de página.
Drop down the contextual menu and select Nuevo.
In the tab Organizador write a name for the style in the box Nombre.
In the box Estilo siguiente…
Choose from the list, the style Por defecto if you want to apply this style to a single page
Choose the name of the style you are creating if you want to apply the style to this page and all pages after this.
Use the rest of tabs to set the rest of format features for the page
ACTIVITY ABELLES
In this acctivity we are going to format a document using styles. Look at this document to see the expected result. Note:some features shown in this document like the font might have been changed.
Open your personal template and save it as bee_style.odt using File | save as. Remember, after this action, to save the file you must use File | save. Never use File | save as otherwise the versions information will be lost.
Download and open the document abella.odt. Copy all the text from it and paste it in your template
Select the first line in the document (“Les abelles”). This is going to be the document headline. Use the menu Formato | Carácter | Tipo de letra or the format toolbar to apply to it the font Dejar vu sans , bold, size 36 points..
Keep selected the first line, use Formato | Párrafo | Sangrado y espaciado, to define a space of 5cm over the paragraph using the text box “Sobre el párrafo”. Click in the tab Alineación and select the option centered (Centrado). Click in the button De acuerdo to apply to the text the changes made so far.
Keep the cursor at the first line. We are going to create a new style based in this text. Press Mayúsculas+F11 and write Título portada as the name of a new style in the window Crea un estilo. Press De acuerdo to save the changes. This will create a paragraph style (estilo de párrafo). Remember, a paragraph style includes not only the paragraph format (alignment, inter paragraph spacing, inter line spacing etc), but also the text format (font, size, bold, italics etc)
Select the second line (“uns insectes...”) format it with the features listed below and define a style (using F11) called Subtítulo portada:
Font: Deja Vu sans, bold, 24 points.
Paragraph format:
Espaciado / Sobre el párrafo de 5 cm
Espaciado / Bajo el párrafo de 5 cm
Alineación centrada
Format the third and fourth lines of text , (“autor...” and “curs...”) and create from them the style autor/a, with the format features listed below. Note: after applying the new style the image will move to an undesired place. Don't mind it, we'll sort it out later (lo arreglaremos después).
Font: Deja Vu sans, bold de 16 puntos
Paragraph format: Align to right
Turn the letter n in Curso 2n, into a superindex with the superscript button in the format toolbar
Save a version
Select some paragraph in the text of the article. Create a new style called texto artículo based in the following format settings
Font: Deja Vu sans de 12 puntos
Paragraph format: Alineación justificada
Select the text of the article (all the text except the headlines in the first page and the section headlines). Apply to it the style texto artículo. To apply the style, just drop down the style list in the format toolbar and select the wished style.
In this text there are two section headlines. The first one is in the sixth line (“Abelles”). Select this text and create a new style encabezado seccion based in its following format settings
Font: arial 18 negrita subrarrado
Paragraph format:
Alignmet: left
Espaciado sobre el texto:0,5
Espaciado bajo el texto:1cm
Apply the style encabezado seccion you have just created to the other section headline “Abelles eusocials”. It is around the middle of the document
Save a version
Lets modify the style texto artículo adding a new feature.
Click anywhere in the page where there is no text to select nothing and press f11 to open the styles window.
Click with the right button on the style button texto artículo in the list of paragraph styles, to get the contextual menu. Select Modificar
Select the tab identation (sangrías): Space after the paragraph (Espacio después del párrafo 0,5cm) and accept. Look how all the paragraphs in the text change the space between paragraphs
Save a version
Now we are going to create a specific page style for the first page (the portrait, which won't be used in the rests of pages. Click the button Estilos de página, in the window estilos y formatos. Choose the option Estilos personalizados in the list bellow the window (it shouldn't show any style).
Drop down the contextual menu in that window and select Nuevo….
In the tab Organizador:
Write Portada in the box name Nombre.
In the box Estilo siguiente choose Estilo predeterminado.
Click in the button De acuerdo to save the changes.
Create a page style called Documento for the rest of the pages with the following features:
In the tab Organizador:
Name: Documento
Siguiente Estilo: Documento (meaning this style will be applied to this page page and the rest after it)
Category: Estilos personalizados
Tab Página:
Formado de papel / Orientación / Horizontal
Márgenes: Todos a 3 cm
Tab header (Cabecera):
Encabezamiento: Activado
Tab footer (Pie):
Pie de página: Activado
Locate the cursro at the beginning of the document (aprieta Ctrl+Inicio).
Double clic the page style Portada to apply it to this pagepara adjudicarlo a esta página. Observa en la segunda casilla de la barra de estado que aparece reflejado el estilo que habréis adjudicado.
Put the cursor in the fourth line of text(the blank line just before the section headline 'abelles').
Select the menu Insertar | Salto manual.
Select the option Salto de página, dropdown the list Estilo, and choose Documento and click in De acuerdo.
Select the button Visualización previa de la página in the standard toolbar and check out how the document looks like. Then click in the button Cierra la visualización previa.
The first picture has jumped to the second page where it was expected to be located, but it is the the center when it must be to the left. Move it to the left just dragging it with the mouse cursor.
Put the cursor in the second page, and clieck in the header rectangle (as shown in the image below.) If you can not see the header rectangle select the menu Visualiza | Límites del texto).
Write Treball sobre les abelles. This will be the document header.
With the text in the header still selected (“Treball sobre les abelles...”), press the keys Ctrl+1 to apply to it the style Encabezamiento 1.
Put the cursor in the page 3 and check if the header ”Treball sobre les abelles” appears in of all the pages. What we write in a header, will appear in all the header pages
Put the cursor in the footer (pie de página) in the 2nd or 3rd pages and select the menu option Inserta | Campo | Número de página.
Next to the page number write “ de “ and next select the menu option insert | Campo | total de páginas.
With the footer text still selected press the keys Ctrl+2 and align it to the right using the tool in the format toolbar.
Add a line to separate footer and header from the main body text. Select the text in the footer and then select the menu option Formato→parrafo→bordes. Select a line in the upper border for the footer, and for the down boorder in the header.
If the second picture in the page 3 has moved to the footer, drag it to the page.
Put the cursor at the end of the document using the keys (Ctrl+Fin).
Insert a page break (insertar→salto de página), but now select in the drop down style list the select the option Por defecto
Save a version of your document using File | version, and later clicking the button save version
Save the document using File | save, or the save button in the tool bar. Never use File | save as otherwise the versions information will be lost
