Activitat 32bis. Scribus Guia d'inici ràpid
In this activity we are going to make the cover page of a painter exhibition book. In this wording the given artist will be Rembradt, however you must open the quiz related to the activity in order to get the painter assigned to you.
To make it clear, in the picture below is shown the expected result, ( in the Rembrandt 's study case)
Create a Folder for the activity.
Log in to Moodle and open the quiz bound to this activity
In this quiz you'll be ramdomly assigned the set of pictures and text needed to carry out the activity. Download the images IN THE ACTIVITY DIRECTORY.
WARNING: IN SCRIBUS, IF YOU INSERT AN IMAGE FILE FROM A FOLDER IN YOUR HARD DISK, AND LATER YOU MOVE THIS FILE TO ANOTHER FOLDER SCRIBUS WILL LOSE THE IMAGE, FORCING YOU TO INSERT IT AGAIN.
WARNING: ALL FILES USED IN SCRIBUS MUST BE LOCATED IN THE SAME DIRECTORY OF THE SCRIBUS PROJECT FILE. DON'T DOWNLOAD THE MOODLE FILES IN THE FOLDER DESCARGAR/BAIXADES. DOWNLOAD THEM STRAIGHT IN THE PROJECT DIRECTORY. OTHERWISE WHEN YOU UPLOAD THE PROJECT, IT WILL LOSE ALL THE IMAGES AND DE TEACHER WON'T BE ABLE TO ASSESS IT PROPERLY,
Warning: Scribus is well known for its conspicuous buggy behavior. You should save a back up copy of your work with a different name every 10 minutes.
Before starting working, you must select a color palete.
Start Scribus, selecting aplicaciones->Gráficos->Scribus
A window as the one shown in the picture below will pop up. Click in the button cancelar in order to open Scribus without opening any document.
From Scribus main menu select the option Edición> Colores. The default palette of colors is called "Scribus básica" and it has a poor number of different colors, as you can see in the dialog shown below
In our project, we are going to use the palette "X11". Drop down the list Conjunto de colores. Select X11 and click in the button Aceptar:
Create a new Scribus document. Click in the menú Archivo> Nuevo, Scribus will open the dialog shown below:
Change the type of unit to millimeters instead of points.
Select 6 pages
Select Doble cara, since we are going to draw also in the page in the back.
Select "Personalizada" in the field Medida de página and change the default Altura to 285 mm. This is the length of a letter page in the U.S.A..
In this front page we are going to print the whole space of the page leaving no margin at all. So set 0 in the four margins boxes.
Leave the default value in the rest of options.
Click in the button "OK", Scribus will create a new page:
Next step is to set up in the page a grey background color. Click in the the icon insert shape, highlighted in yellow in the image below
The mouse cursor turns into a cross (+). Click in the upper left corner of the page and draw the cross to the bottom right corner. The objective is to draw a rectangle covering the full size of the page
Even though in first sight the rectangle seems to perfectly match the page, if you zoom the page corners you will find this is not true. There might be some places where the rectangle stands out of the page limits and others where it is too small to fit them. This lack of accuracy is not a problem in a home made document printed in your personal printer. But you should understand that Scribus is designed to edit high quality documents in a professional printing house, and these mismatches will be clearly visible after being printed in a modern high quality offset printer giving a shabby and sloppy appearance to the document. We must resize and relocate the rectangle ensuring it fits the page in a more accurate way.
Place the cursor on the rectangle and drop down the contextual menu. Select Propiedades or press F2 to open the Paleta de Propiedades.
The default tab in this dialog is “X, Y, Z".
Name the rectangle as fondo_pagina
Relocate the rectangle in the position x=0,and y=0, taking as Punto base the upper left corner. The base point is the point that will be considered the coordinates origin, that is the position X=0,Y=0. To choose a base point use the control shown in the image below.
Set witdth = 210 a d high = 285 ( which turns out to be the size of a Letter regular page)
Now our rectangle matches exactly the page covering it entirely. In Scribus, and in any other graphic design programs you'd rather use coordinates and numeric fields (as width, high, length etc) than just drawing the shapes manually, in order to improve the quality of the final result.
By default Scribus sets to "Ninguno" the area color for any new object. Select the tab Colors and click in the button color de relleno < . Select a grey color like "Grey46" or any other similar dark grey.
The default border color in the shapes are black. But we don't want a black line in the borders of our page. So, click in the button colores de lineal, < to set to null the rectangle border colors
We have finished the background of our front page. To make sure we don't move or modify it accidentally we must block its position. Select the tab X,Y,Z, and click in the button bloqueo < which must change to the blocked state <
To go on you must log into Moodle. Open the link to the quizz bound to this activity and download the painter's image that will be assigned to you randomly.
In Scribus, Pictures and text objects are always associated to an image frame or a text frame. First you must define the frames and later insert the picture or write the text:
Select the button create image frame <
Draw the picture frame clicking in one position in the page and dragging to other. For the moment don't mind the size or position of the new frame
Drop down the frame contextual menu and select the option Propiedades.
Change the frame name to "Rembrandt1", (in your case write the name of the painter assigned to you in Moodle)
Our portrait should be placed in the bottom right corner as shown in the image
The coordinates of the page in its bottom right corner are X=210, Y=285 , so let's assign these coordinates to the bottom right corner of the image frame to ensure it matches the bottom right corner of the page with perfect accuracy . First select the bottom right corner of the frame as the Base point
And assign to this point the coordinates X=210, Y=285
Now set your painter's portrait as the frame picture. Drop down the frame contextual menu and select Obtener imagen
This will open a dialog to select a picture
Click in the button abrir or just double click the image
It might happen that the geometry of your painter's portrait doesn't match that of the picture frame. Scribus will adapt the picture to the size of the frame, and as a result there will be a mismatch in the painter proportions
Proportions altered after inserting the image on the frame
This is a very frequent issue while working with images in Scribus. We must learn how to sort it out. First thing you must do is to DISABLE proportional and escala a medida del marco, this option will adjust the image to fit the frame without altering the image proportions. Instead enable Escalat LLiure
Now we have an image with intact proportions, fitting the frame width but not the height (or viceversa), as shown in the image below
We must upscale or downscale the image so that I takes up the full size of the frame. Click in the tab imagen from the frame properties and increase the size of the image. To keep the same proportions between width and height, make sure the button mantener la escala x e y is enabled ( showing a little picture of a chain)
We can improve the result. The painter is slightly shifted to the right . Let's center him moving the image to the left: Click in the Posición X buttons to move him horizontally to the left (this means to set a negative number in the coordinate X)
To improve the image we are going is to create a shading effect. Select the frame and select the option Objeto/Duplicación múltiple from the main menu. This will create a shifted copy of the selected frame. We need a -6mm horizontal shifting (the number must be negative because we want to move it to the left)
Select the frame Rembrandt2, (the created copy), drop down the contextual menu and select Efectos de imagen
Using this dialog we can set some special effects to the image. Apply these four effects:
Desenfoque (radio 7.0)
Escala de grises
Brillo (ajustado a -44)
Now, let's move this frame under the painter's portrait. Get the frame properties and click in the tab X,Y,Z, click the button bajar un nivel highlighted in yellow in the image below. Remember, we want it under the portrait but it must be over the gray rectangle
This is the expected result
Let's go on. Next task is to design the front page headlines showing the name of the painter, and the the exhibition name.
Click in the button marco de texto < in the main tool bar to create a text frame.
Create the frame clicking in a corner and dragging to the other. As a reference to place the frame use the image of the expected result shown below. The frame must be large enough to contain the text assigned in Moodle as the front page tittle.
Double click the frame to start inserting text. Write the name of the painter as it has been assigned to you in Moodle. For instance, in this case , Rembradt, for Rembrandt Van Riijn, or Velázquez, for Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez .
Open the text frames properties (F2). In the panel ficha select the font Gentium or any other similar.
Adjust the font size so that the painter's name fills most of the frame text. The chosen font size in the Rembrandt case was 87pt. Depending on the length of your painter's name you should adjust a greater or lower value.
Set a white color for the text
The result should look like this:
The front page looks still a bit dull. Now we are going to add some fancy design to it. Let's add the rest of the name of our painter in a second frame. In Rembrandt case the it is "van Rijn".
Insert another text frame under the first one. Click in the button marco de texto< in the main tool bar
Double click the frame to enter the rests of your painter's name (in Rembrandt's case, van Rijn, for Velazquez's, it is Diego, for Rubens' it is Peter Paul, etc.. You have the whole name in Moodle ).
Choose the same letter font and size you used in the upper frame text, but now use "Pink2" color instead of white.
Use the panel "Colores" in the frame properties to set "Sombra" to 50% and "opacidad" to 20%
Move the "Van Rijn" frame a level under the frame "Rembrandt":
Add some additional text frames for the painter's year of birth and “2006”. You will get year of birth in Moodle. Use again the font Gentium and try to adjust the size to fit the frames as shown in the image. As a reference, in the Rembrandt study case we have used 53pt and 31pt. Use a different color for the each year, but avoid striking colors. To keep a certain ensemble harmony use rather pastel colors
Draw a horizontal line between both years,
Click in the icon "Línea" in the main tool bar and draw a horizontal line clicking in the start point, and draggint it to the end point, while at the same time pressing the key Ctrl. The use of Ctrl forces the line o be drawn in angles multiple of 30º.
Next, open the line properties and in the panel "línea" set the line thickness, and color "WhiteSmoke".
Finally, move the line between the year text frames (that is between "1606" and "2006"). In graphic design, symmetry matters, so tray to place the lane at the same distance from the text in both text frames
In this step we are going to add a publisher house name and emblem. Our imaginary Publishers are called "Scribus Publicaciones". This way we will use the Scribus logo as the company emblem. Download it from here:
Create a little image frame in the bottom left side of the page, between the page borders and the painter's image.
Use the section color, in the frame properties to make sure that the frame area color is set to "Ninguno", because our logo background is transparent.
Select Obtener imagen in the frame contextual menu.
In this document predominate the soft and pastel colors. The logo colors are rather too striking. Open the contextual menu and select the option Efectos de. Select "en escala de grises" and increase the contrast so that the logo colors fade out a bit.
Add a text frame to insert the name of the publishers "ScribusPublishing". In the panel "X, Y, Z" (from its properties) write "Scribus Publicaciones". Select the font "Bitstream Charter" or any othe similar with size 13 pt and color "Grey97".
Finally, turn the frame text 90 degrees. Use the field rotación setting 90º (panel "X, Y, Z" in the properties window)
Move the frame text frame somewhere over the publisher's logo
Make a screen capture of Scribus opening this project in your computer an upload it to Moodle
Scribus saves a file with the extension .sla, which doesn't include any images. If you upload only this file the teacher won't be able to assess your task. Therefore use the option Fichero | reunir para terminar (En valenciando Fixer | recull per a sortir o File | collect to exit) from the main menu to prepare all the files needed to deliver the project for assessment. Activate the options incluir fuentes and incluir perfiles de color.
The option reunir para terminar gathers all files used in the project in a folder. Compress the folder with all its contents and upload it to Moodle. If it is too big (more than 1mb) send it by email to:
