This is a Clilstore unit. You can .
In this activity we are going to work in a planes magazine. We will make the layout of the cover page, and later in the second part, we will edit four pages corresponding to the main article.
First, get the pictures assigned to you in order to carry out this activity. You must log into Moodle, open the quiz associated with the activity and download the images and texts in the different questions
Create a new Scribus document with the following settings:
Doble cara
A4 vertical.
5 páginas
Unidad de medida milimetros
primera página derecha
Márgenes tipo revista
Fitxer | nou
There are three key elements when it comes to make a cover page layout:
An impacting and striking main image, using most of the space in the page
The magazine name, highlighted as much as possible.
The outstanding headlines outlining the most exciting articles. There must be a main article in large letters and two secondary articles with smaller images and text.
Let's start inserting an image the size of the whole cover page
Insert an image frame filling the whole page. We will use the Scribus images wizard. Select the menu option INSERTAR/inserir | MARCO/mostra marco and select the options shown in the images below
In valencian the option same as the page is translated as nova pagina maestra
Log into Moodle, open the quiz associated with the activity and download to the project folder the image randomly assigned to you as main background image
We must adjust theimage to the size of the frame, changing the scale and position in the properties window.
Remember. We want the aeronautic geeks lining up to buy the magazine. They never will buy it, if the main picture shows a deformed plane. If your image shape doesn't match the frame, upscale/downscale it keeping the length/width proportion. Look at the images below, this is what you SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT DO
ORIGINAL IMAGE
RIGHT IMAGED UPSCALED FOCUSING A PART OF THE PICTURE It is always better to lose a part of the original image than deform its proportions |
WRONG IMAGE FRAMED DEFORMING ITS PROPORTIONS Absolutely unacceptable. Planes geeks know that a F-15 doesn't look like this |
Its important to keep some space for the secondary articles and the name of the magazine. Look at the following images, where you can see some examples of expected result.
Block the position and size of the background picture once inserted, selecting contextual menu | bloquear
Save a first version of your magazine as revista_avionesv1.sla.
Then save another version as revista_avionesv2.sla and carry on working on it.
Use the option fichero→recolectar para salida in order to make a backup copy in other folder
In this step we are going to design the magazine name in big letters. In this study case the magazine name will be AVIONICA. You must look for your magazine name in the quiz associated with the activity. Insert a text frame about the size and position shown in the image below using the menu Insertar | marco de texto. Considerer it just as a reference: in the frame shown in the image, the name 'Avionica' fits properly, but you might be assigned a much longer name and possibly you might need a bigger, wider frame, (or a smaller, more narrow one) Keep in mind that the priority is to sell the product, the very magazine itself, and that's why the name must be strongly highlighted
To edit the text, select the frame, drop down the contextual menu, and select editar texto. Possibly your first attempt will be a bit flawed as shown in the image below.
The problem is the text doesn't match the frame size. We must adjust its size using the option editar texto from the contextual menu. We can modify the size changing these parameters
Font type: In this case select a Bold font(negrita)
Font size. We need text in a large format(between 80 and 120 points)
The characters width . De default value is 100%. We can narrow or widen the text using this control
The characters height . Use this control to match the frame height.
Space among the letters This is going to be a headline, and to emphasize it we are using an increased space inter-letters
To see how the name looks like using different font types use Editar --> Vista previa de fuentes/previsualització del tipus de lletra, as shown in the following image.
Remember, before using the edition window, first you must select the text
As a reference, using the settings in the picture above, the result is the headlines shown in the picture below.
You should devout some minutes to experimenting with the parameters in order to get your own design, which by no means might be the one shown in the image. It's not required that the text perfectly matches the frame. Just try to get a similar size.
If the name of your magazine is way longer than AVIONICA, for example: AVIACIÓN INTERNACIONAL, you can follow the next steps
The first possible action is to increase the width of the frame.
If the name includes two words, write the text in two lines instead of a single one. Just insert a line break between the words
If one line overlaps the other as show in the image below…..
Get the text frame properties window (contextual menu | propiedades) and increase the number value in the field interlineado fijo until seen the text in two lines properly separated
Make any further adjustment of your choice. For example in the case of study we have designed the first line larger than the second emphasizing the word AVIACIÓN regarding to INTERNACIONAL
Save your project. Then save another version as revista_avionesv3.sla and carry on working on it. Use the option fichero→recolectar para salida in order to make a backup copy in other folder
Let's make the name of the magazine more eye-catching. Give the text borders a different color, open again the text frame properties and select the panel texto. Then click in the button Colores y efectos. In the image below is shown the color effects panel. You must use the button Outline (borde de texto) to give a border color to the text. By default, the border will have a thickness of 1% of the whole letter. but the if you click in the button for some seconds, an edition box will pop up where you will be able to set a different percentage. Experiment with different percentages, but as a reference a value under 1% should be fine. (warning, don’t pay attention to the 3% shown in the image)
After this action the border, and background text color control will get enabled (before it was disabled). Select a different color for borders and background. Try different combinations of colors
Now we will insert the triangle seen in the image below. Select the menu option Insertar | Insertar formas (insert shapes) | formas por defecto (default shapes) | triángulo. Create a triangle from corner to corner of the frame, as shown in the image
Let's edit the shape of the triangle, adding new points to it. Drop down the properties window (contextual menu | propiedades)
Step 1. In the section Forma, in the properties window select editar. This will open a shape edition window as shown in the image below.
Step 2. Reflect vertically the triangle clicking in the button marked by the arrow number 2
Step 3. Drag the right corner point of the triangle from the border of the frame to a intermediate point in the frame
Set cap as border color for the triangle
Move the triangle to the background of the name of the magazine. In the property windows of the triangle select the section X,Y Z and click in the buttons level down (nivel abajo) until seeing the triangle under the text, but over the plane image
Next we are going to add guide lines (lineas guía) to help us to get a more accurate design. To insert a guide line, click in the horizontal ruler over the page (arrow 1 in the image below) and drag down the mouse cursor. This movement will allow you to place a horizontal guide on the image wherever you want.
Note: if you can not see the guides, maybe Scribus is working in Preview mode. To disable the preview mode disable the option Visualización | preview mode
Sometimes, while working with guides, seeing the images might be an annoyance, and it is convenient to disable them selecting the menu option visualización | mostrar imágenes.
Place a horizontal guide passing through the lower left corner of the triangle
Open the shape edition menu again: Drop down the triangle contextual menu, select propiedades , click in forma, and click in the button editar forma
Then click in the button añadir un punto, (signaled in the image below with the arrow 1) and then click anywhere in the hypotenuse (arrow 2). This will add an edition point allowing us to create a completely different shape.
Use the guide line as a reference, to move the new point to a position parallel to the lower left vertex of the triangle, look at the image below.
Put another line guide on the upper border of the triangle. Then move the right upper vertex to the left as seen in the image below.
To see the result, enable the image visualization using the menu visualización | mostrar imagen
Insert a new rectangle: Select insertat | insertar forma | formas por defecto | rectángulo. This rectangle must have the width of the page and the height of the triangle shape, and must overlap the red triangle.
Select the rectangle, drop down its properties, and select colors. Set white as area color and no border color
Send down two levels the rectangle, to place it under the red triangle and the text, but over the background image
We are going to assign a semi-transparent color to the white rectangle, Try different combinations in the field opacitat. The goal is to keep visible the background image while at the same time emphasizing the name of the magazine. Look at the image below how the visibility of the letters CA in the word AVIONICA, heavily varies depending on the level of transparency set to the white rectangle
Improve the text setting a shade. Open the property panel of the text and click in the shade button (see the image below)
Save your project. Then save another version as revista_avionesv4.sla and carry on working on it. Use the option fichero→recolectar para salida in order to make a backup copy in other folder
Remember, in this cover we want to highlight the article that the editor considers most appealing. We have already inserted exciting image of the plane about which the article talks as the background in the cover page and now we must add a headline advertising the article.
Log into Moodle and look up the article headline text assigned to you in the third question of the quizz
First you must decide where to place the headline. Consider the space available and how much space is needed. The headline must be big enough to be eye-catching and at the same time shouldn't cover the plane in the background. Insert a text frame and write on it he text assigned to you. Depending on its length and the space available you can write it in 1, 2 or 3 lines. Remember, you'll need space available for the secondary articles. Look the following pictures to get inspired, and decide where to place the headlines and the space set apart for the two secondary articles.
Adjust the text size in order to fit the space available in the text frame, (as you made with the magazine name
Set a proper font and size
Set the height and width of the text, and the inter-letters and inter-lines space
Set an area color
Set a border line color and thickness
Set a shade to the text
Adjust the position an size of the frame. Warning, avoid covering the main subject on this cover: the planes in the background image
You must leave some space for the two secondary articles and their images
Save your project. Then save another version as revista_avionesv5.sla and carry on working on it. Use the option fichero→recolectar para salida in order to make a backup copy in other folder
Usually the cover must summarize the main contents of the magazine. This means to advertise between 2 and 4 secondary articles, besides the main article. We are going to add a little headline and an image for every article. In the previous step you are supposed to have planned where to place these secondary articles.
Log into Moodle and look up the article headline text and picture assigned to you in the fourth question of the quizz. Insert the image using an image frame.
Insert a semi-transparent rectangle between the article image and the background image. This rectangle will encompass both the text and image of the secondary article, reducing the discontinuity created by the strong contrast of colors between both images, and also linking the image and the text of the secondary article. Use propiedades | color | opacidad to set the transparency level
On the triangle write the text assigned to you in the 4th question in the Moodle quiz . Format the text with an appealing font, size and colors
Repeat the same procedure to insert the second secondary article
Save the project, and then save it as revista_avionesvfinal.sla. Select fichero | recojer para terminar. This will create a folder with all the images involved in the project. Compress this folder and send it by email to:
