The Carbon Cycle

What is CARBON?

Carbon is one of the most important elements to life on planet Earth. It forms more compounds and forms the basis to all plant and animal life.

Carbon makes up about 18% of the human body.

Its symbol is C

All living things are made of carbon. Carbon is also a part of the ocean, air, and even rocks.

Carbon is continuously cycled and reused.

In the atmosphere, carbon is attached to some oxygen in a gas called carbon dioxide. CO2

Plants use carbon dioxide and sunlight to make their own food and grow through the PHOTOSYNTHESIS process.

During photosynthesis, carbon becomes part of the plant, and the plant releases oxygen. When plants die and are buried under layers of earth for millions of years, they may turn into fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.

When these fuels are burned, the carbon is released back into the atmosphere.
