Energy concern

1) Warming activity (20min)

To start with the lesson you have to watch the following video and do the tasks proposed above:

- Write down the words that you already know (maximum 10) and construct a sentence with each one.

- Write down the words that you don't know (maximum 10).

- Together with the rest of the class, try to guess the meaning of the unknown words and create a Word Cloud using the following app: http://www.wordle.net/

- Now, you can check the meaning of some of the unknown words just clicking on them:

light methane
waste atmosphere
power plant global warming
coal efficient
fossil fuel save energy

 2) Understanding video (20min)

Now, it's time to visualize the next video. It lasts about 4 minutes and it talkes about electricity and its sources (renewable and non renewable). After this, you have to complete the True-False activity you will find in the following attached pages.

3) Jigsaw reading (30min)

The next task is called "jigsaw" and it is a kind of cooperative learning activity.

In the next lines you can find the instructions to perform it, and in the page called "Jigsaw reading" all the material you need is attached.

- Create 3-member groups and assign a number to each member (1, 2 and 3).

- Each member has to read individually the corresponding text according to its number.

- Create 3 big groups according to the number assigned and disccuss with the other members the ideas of the text, making sure that the whole group has understood it.

- The initial groups are formed again and have to fill in the empty chart. Each expert (1, 2 or 3) has to explain the other two members the information present in its own text.

- When each group completes its chart, each one is corrected twice (by two different groups).

4) Final discussion (30min)

As a final activity you have to discuss with the rest of the class about the following topics:

a) Renewable energy vs. non-renewable energy (advantages and disadvantages).

b) Measures you can take in your daily routine to save energy.

The idea is that before discussing it orally, you have to think about it and write the most important ideas in your notebook. This will help you later when speaking with your classmates.

In the next pages you will find attached a summary of the most typical expressions used to show your own opinion. They could be useful for this last activity, as well as the information about comparatives and superlatives.
