All modern computers | kəm.ˈpjuː.təz | and computer-based devices, such as smartphones, cameras, etc. use the binary system.

The binary system | ˈbaɪ.nə.ri ˈsɪ.stəm | uses only two figures | ˈfɪ.ɡəz | or symbols:  | ˈsɪm.bl̩z | 0 (zero) and 1 (one). It is very important in computers.

Each digit | ˈdɪ.dʒɪt | is called bit | bɪt |. So, with 2 bits we can express 4 different numbers: 00, 01, 10 and 11. In general, with n bits, we can express 2n numbers.
