APPLICATION OF GEOMETRIC DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

As a final project of the teaching unit GEOMETRIC FORMS AND POLYGONS it is proposed to create a geometric drawing, from the construction of polygons learned in the unit.

PRE-TASK

Step 1: BRAINSTORMING TASK

First of all, they should watch the video "Life Geometry forms", just to introduce the students how geometry envolves us in our daily routine.

In groups of three people, a debate will begin where the students will determine the apllications of geometric drawings, for example for the design of shirts, or for the creation of prints in the fabrics. Each group will determine three applications to later expose their choice to the rest of the class.

Step 2: REMEMBERING HOW GEOMETRIC DRAWINGS ARE CONSTRUCTED

Now is time to remember what students have learned in this unit.

They are going to watch this video, just to remember step by step, how to construct a composition with regular polygons:

TASK 1

Step 3: FIRST SKETCHES

The teacher will provide students a sheet in wich they will have to work those sketches. In this sheet, they have two columns with three circles for ideas on geometric design that they must draw, in the first column they will show the geometric analysis and the second color.

Step 4: DRAWING A GEOMETRICAL DESIGN

It is time for students start drawing their own design. It is an individual work.

Following the completeion of the sketches, you will choose the ones you liked most to do it as a final project. To do this, first, they must let their imagination go an draw.

TASK 2

Step 5: SPOKEN PRESENTATION

In group of 4 people.

They will have 15 minutes to preparate individually a brief presentation o theri art work. They will have to tell a story including de following points:

1) The use of a determined color or shape

2) How they have divided the circumference

3) The patterns they have used

4) The meaning of the picture

5) Any other personal comment such as if they were inspired by some example or they feelings during the process of drawing.

It is important to emphasize the technical vocabulary they have learned.

On this website they will find some tips and expressions that will help them prepare their presentation:

Another webiste is that in wich some students show their design and introduce their peers their ideas on how they have done the design:

They will have 5 minutes to deliver their presentation to the other members of the group.

After each presentation their peers that were listening will ask them some questions abou the drawing an the presentation. Then, there will be a small debate in the same groups in order to compare and contrast the different art works.

TASK 3

Step 6: HOW TO PUT PICTURES OF ARTWORK ON T-SHIRTS

Now that students have designed their own drawing, let's see how you can apply a design for creating objects and pieces in our everyday life, such as making our own T-shirt with our design.

Students watch the following video explaining how to stamp our shirt with our design:

Step 7: MAKING MY OWN T-SHIRT

The teacher gives the students special paper, on which they transfer their drawing.

Afterwards, each student will preparate his cotton T-shirt and in groups of 3 people, they will approach the table where the teacher will have equiped with an iron, where under his supervision the students will transfer the drawings to the shirts.

As the students have finished their T-shirt, they will lay it on the rope with tweezers that the teacher has previouly left prepared so that everyone can see and appreciate the design of their other classmates.

CONCLUSION

End the class by thanking the students for their attention, collaboration and participation.
