Salvador Dalí and the cinema

Salvador Dalí and the cinema

1. Motivation

See the next video, and then read the small explanation about the scene, don't worry about the vocabulary or if you don't understand anything.

Scene from Spellbound (A. Hitchcock 1945)

Dalí worked with famous filmmakers, such as Alfred Hitchcock. The most well-known of his film projects is probably the dream sequence in Hitchcock's Spellbound, which is a 1945 American film noir psychological mystery thriller film directed by Hitchcock. It tells the story of the new head of a mental asylum who turns out not to be what he claims.

This dream sequence, which heavily delves into themes of psychoanalysis, dealt with the idea that a repressed experience can directly trigger a neurosis.

Hitchcock needed a dreamlike quality to his film, that's why he thought that Dalí's work would help create the atmosphere he wanted in his film because Dali's iconography refers to the dreamlike world mainly.

2. Prior knowledge activation and linking to L2 vocabulary.

We are going to do an online quiz using kahoot, the link is on the top (Kahoot button)

3. Content and Language development.

The teacher will give the students a copy of the transcription.pdf (there is a button on the top), we will see the scene 2 times more, they will underline the unknow vocabulary or any grammar doubt.

Using worlink, the students will look for all the unknow vocabulary (there is a button on the top), and we will discuss the grammar doubts.

While everything takes place, the teacher will be checking their progress, and help the students with anything.

After these activities, the students will work in pairs looking for information about the relation between Dali’s surrealism and the scene from Spellbound. (This information will be used to carry out the final task)

The teacher will give the students several links in order to help their research.
