3-hour CLIL lesson - Kinematic elements

INTRODUCTION

Kinematics is the branch of mechanics that deals with pure motion, without reference to the masses or forces involved in it. It is one of most important part of physics and, in this 3-hour lesson; we are going to remember its most important elements.

First of all, you should watch the video on the right which introduce you into this unit.

 VOCABULARY

SESSION 1

At this lesson we will learn a new mathematical tool: the differential calculus for analysing how things change and we will use it in our description of the physic world. You are going to see a half-hour video about how humans can use the differential calculus while you are answering some questions you will find at bottom of this page (remember, you can switch the subtitles on if you need it). Five minutes after you watch the video, we will correct all the questions.

SESSION 2

As we know that the language of calculus was invented, in large part, to better explain the physical world around us. Please, divide you into groups of four people to answer the quiz about some physic derivable magnitudes. Take your time (20 minutes maximum) to find online every magnitude before answer it. You need to be in agreement before answer every question.

Now, working with the same people, we are going to study the different types of movements in kinematics we must learn in this unit:

  1. Rectilinear motion without acceleration.
  2. Rectilinear motion with constant acceleration.
  3. Rotational motion without angular acceleration.
  4. Rotational motion with constant angular acceleration.

Every group will investigate a kind of movement and will prepare a 3 or 4 pages maximum presentation for next session. You can use every material you want: books, notebooks, Internet...

SESSION 3

At the beginning of this third session, you have 10 minutes to finish your presentation with your group partners. Remember to send an e-mail to the teacher with your group presentation. After that, you will show your investigation to your classmates. Remember to read and follow the rubric if you want to obtain the maximum grade in this activity.

 ASSESSMENT

This 3-hour lesson has three activities and every activity has a different assess type. Students should finish their activities before the end of the three sessions because teacher will evaluate them. While students are doing their activities, the teacher will observe and will pay attention to the use of L2. Also, the teacher assess students using these criteria:

    - The first activity has five questions and teacher will help students to correct them. The teacher will assess student participation from 0 to 2 points.

    - The second activity is a quiz. It has ten questions and the teacher will assess your group investigation from 0 to 1 point, and how your group be in agreement before answer every question from 0 to 2 points.

    - The third activity is the most important one and students have a rubric to know how the assessment will be. Teacher will assess their group oral presentation from 0 to 5 points.
