Interview: Chair Agnes Rennie (Plans and Partnerships)

Um, at board level we’ve, we’ve, um, prioritised two main projects – one which is about building a new office for, for – a new, a new base, I guess, for the trust, which includes an office space. It also includes some learning, training space, uh, and also a small meeting space for the trust itself, and that’ll be, be based in the middle of the estate. And, uh, we also have a renewable energy project, which we hope, once that is established, will provide a very very important revenue source for the trust.

The, the office, um, base that we have for the trust, uh, has been designed, um, deliberately to be as energy-efficient, and that the materials used, uh, and indeed the design of the building will, uh, reflect a, a very very low carbon involvement. In fact, as far as we know, the building is to be zero carbon rated. Uh, and, and we think that will be a very very good example of how such a building can be built within an area such as the islands.

Greenspace were involved. We, we took a lot, a good bit of advice from Greenspace. Indeed, um, we have a very good relationship with the local college, um, and, and UHI. And, um, you know, where appropriate we work with students, we work with research students, and in this case we worked closely with, with Greenspace. Uh, we also worked with Greenspace, um, for a year when we were taking meteorological readings for, um, to check out the, the efficiency of the site of our renewable energy project.

It’s, we feel that it’s very important that we have, um, local income generation and, uh, a community-scale renewable energy project can actually generate a sizeable income, and should mean that, as we take other projects forward, indeed as other groups within the community wish to take projects forward, that we, the trust, will be in a position to invest in such projects, and that there shouldn’t be as much requirement for, um, for investment, uh, from, from public agencies.
