Maiden's Tower

THE MAIDEN’S TOWER

The history of the maiden’s towers – the mysterious tower of the seas, spleen and legends- goes back to archaic age. It bears the traces of Greek, Byzantium and Ottoman Empires.

Many poems were written on this tower of love, inaccesibility and loneliness. Many paintings of the tower were prepared and many photos of it were taken. Due to its inaccesibility, people couldn’t learn about the life in the tower but they just created stories about it. The most common story told about the tower is about the tragical love of Hero and Leandros. The story begins as Hero leaves the tower. Hero is one of the priestess of the Aphrodite and she is banned from love. Every year they used to celebrate the spring as a feast. Many people would come for this feast. They would eat and drink and have joyfull times. Girls and boys from the Artemisia temple would dance. Hero met Leandros at this feast. They fell in love and bless their love as Leandros came to the tower. The maiden’s tower was the witness of their hidden love. However one day, one of the directors of Artemisia temple saw Hero while she was making sign to Leandros. On a stormy day, the director made the sign to Leandros. Leandros saw the light and tried to follow the light in the sea. When he reached Üsküdar coast, he thought “Hero will help me to find my way with her light.” However he was wrong. It was not Hero who lit the light. The director of the temple blew out the light deliberately. Leandros died while he was fighting with the wild sea. When Hero learnt this in the morning, she threw herself from the Maiden’s Tower.
